Bookended by Beauty Queens Tour Stop!

Hey guys! Today, I'm hosting a tour stop/promo post for Bookended by Beauty Queens to celebrate the release of the audiobook! There's an excerpt!

Bookended By Beauty QueensTitle: Bookended by Beauty Queens
Author: Victoria Marshal
Genre: Women’s Fiction
Angie Palmer likes her life just the way it is–private. She has no desire to entangle herself in complex friendships, and her relationship with her two beauty queen sisters is safely distant.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t always go as planned.

When disaster strikes her Grandmother, Angie takes her into her home. A life with Grandma comes a world full of changes, and new friends, including Val, a drag queen with hopes of being the next US-Gay Beauty Pageant winner. Angie is determined to keep Val at a distance. Val has an instinct for knowing what is in Angie heart.

Just as Angie gets comfortable with Grandma living with her, a budding friendship with Val, and a new romantic interest, everything takes an unexpected turn.

Val becomes the victim of a violent crime and ends up in a coma. Angie begins a struggle against Val’s family who wants to remove their son from life support.

Suddenly her private life becomes very public, and her world becomes a media circus. Angie is caught in a clash between religious beliefs and gay rights.

Through many twists and turns, Angie discovers a new appreciation for family, friends, and love.

In the end, Angie learns that a life filled with people to care about is never too crowded.

Excerpt :

“My sisters haven’t even called to see how grandma’s doing. They haven’t offered to help her look for an apartment or take her shopping for new clothes. Nothing.”
“Did they spend a lot of time with her before the fire?” Val asked.
“No.”
“Did you?”
Angie felt Val’s point as sharp as the point of a fine tipped pen. “No.”
“So they’re going about their lives like they always have?”
Angie didn’t respond.
“If Anne’s apartment hadn’t burned you wouldn’t have been calling her to see how she was doing, would you?”
“No, but this is different.”
“Is it?”
“Yes, if grandma were staying with Jess or Shay I would call to see how she was doing.”
Val folded his fingers together. “Then you should feel good about that.”
Angie felt sick to her stomach. She dropped her spoon on the table and wiped her fingers on a paper napkin.
“Well, I did until you put it that way.”
Angie sank down in her seat and shredded the edge of the napkin.
“You’re the middle child right?” Val asked.
Angie nodded.
“Then you should be used to this by now. Let me guess, you’ve always been the responsible one. Everyone always came to you with their problems because you’re close in age to your older sister and your younger sister.”
Val had hit the nail on the head. Angie had been the confidant for both Jess and Shay growing up. Not that she enjoyed the role; they forced it on her.
“So why are your panties in such a bunch?” Val gave her an exaggerated pout. “Feeling sorry for yourself?”
“Yes, damn it!” Angie slapped her palms onto the tabletop. “I have the right to feel sorry for myself every once in awhile.”
“Agreed,” Val said. “You go ahead and have your pity-party.”
Angie felt suddenly deflated. She’d expected an argument, or a pep-talk of some kind.
“What?”
“Everyone gets twenty-four-hours to feel sorry for themselves.” Val glanced at the clock. “I’d say you have eighteen left, so wallow all you want. After that honey, go buy yourself a new dress, or a new pair of shoes, or whatever you need to do to pick yourself back up. Then get on with your life.”

My Opinion :

Back on the Court is not the kind of book I normally read; I am a YA fiction lover, and this was more of a non-fiction adult novel. And, it's a memoir. So, yeah, a big change, so that's why my review will be a little different :D

Even if Back on the Court is not my normal read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think what I liked the most about it was how much it felt real.

Back on the Court is about Sonya, a basketball girl. And now, she has lost her fiancé to a car/train accident days before their wedding. And she may never be able to play basketball. But, what if she doesn't even want to live anymore?

The author actually was the one to live through the grief-packed story. She is the Sonya that lost her fiancé, that found love again and made a family. She is the Sonya that will always love Mark, and will always love Jason.

I am not going to talk that much about the characters... because they exist(ed) in real life.

One thing I have to say about this book, is that I have never cried that much while reading a book. The grief felt so real, because it's (was) real! I couldn't stop crying at any mention of Mark. At least I didn't read it at school :D

A grief-packed book that will keep you cheering for Sonya, the main character.

Back on the Court was an emotional ride for me. It was beautiful, probably because of how much grief was in there, and how beautifully the overwhelming sadness was written.

This may not be your type of book, but give it a try. It's magnificent.

Title : Letters from the Ledge
Series :  -
Author : Lynda Meyers
Pages : 353
Release Date : Jan 11th 2012
Publisher : Hallway 11
Format : Paperback
Source :
** This book was sent to me by the author in exchange of an honest review**

My Opinion :

This book was just... wow. Just read it. You'll understand.

This was an incredible debut you don't want to miss!

Letters from the Ledge is, from how I'd describe it, a YA/Adult (well... more of a YA) contemporary romance... mixed with some 'coming of age' and other pretty intense stuff. I received this book from the author, and, I have to admit, I know I would have never discovered this amazing book if it weren't for book blogging.

Letters from the Ledge is about two (well... um... four... but two are more of main characters). There'S Brendan; a guy who smokes pot and cuts himself, because his father doesn't really treats him well, and he has just lost a really good friend to suicide. His life hasn't been the best. He meets Sarah, who's a good kinda girl. Then, there'S Paige, who's got a boyfriend, Nate. She got raped once, in an alley, and since then she hasn't been the same, even if it happened two years ago. And then, Paige gets 'employed' by Brendan's father. And, they kinda all meet. (Just so you know, the story is actually really more complicated than that... so yeah, read. the. book!)

Letters from the Ledge is a moving story you don't want to miss. The book was just so great!

I absolutely loved this book! It was amazing! I mean, it'S fast-paced, it keeps your attention all the way, the writing is great, there's drama, it's action-packed; IT's GREAT! As I said, it keeps your attention, because you can't wait to see what will happen next.

I've grown attached to the characters, especially Brendan, and I'm kinda sad to see him go. He'S just so.... special. At first I thought he was just another kid that smoked pot and just didn't care about  other people. I just thought he was going to be a jerky kid who got everything he wanted, especially pot. But, he turned out to be a great, awesome, lovely, hot (*cue the fangirl giggles). I just... really liked him a lot. Sarah, you better be ready, because I'm going to steal your lover boy and you'll never see his face again... because I'll be kissing him (*again, cue the fangirl giggles*)

Paige was actually really good. I thought that, even though she was fragile from what had happened to her, she was a great character.

Nate was cute too :D I liked him quite a lot, although I think that he just fluffied everything to muck for Paige before.

Sarah... I would have liked to get a bit more of her story. And more of her and Brendan's romance, since, I really love romance.

The characters were really well developed; which is always what helps building a book with a great story and plot line .

I jsut kept turning the pages faster and faster, until there was anything left :(

RATING

5 roses! INCREDIBLE BOOK!

Author Bio :

Lynda MeyersLynda Meyers is an author whose depth and authenticity is revealed continually through her writing. She seems to blow past genres, genders and age brackets and instead delivers stories and characters that can't easily be written off.

Her ability to describe so fully the interior struggle surrounding issues like depression, rape, addiction and cutting is startling in its beauty. She takes readers deep into the hearts and minds of troubled characters but doesn't leave them there. Humor, intelligent dialogue and intense metaphor are tucked into the corners of real life and used to expertly create a portrait that stares back at you no matter where you're standing in the room.

Regarding Letters From The Ledge, editor Mick Silva remarked: "Lynda Meyers writes messed up dreamers as easily as falling off a ledge...This is a novel, but it isn't fiction. I found hope in these poignant letters of tragic beauty, and somehow felt found myself."

Letters From The Ledge began as a vision, in which she saw the characters come into view one by one, like the opening scene of a movie. An excerpt (the first three chapters) as well as the ability to order signed copies of the book can be found at her blog: www.writeonedge.blogspot.com or the book's website http://www.lettersfromtheledge.com .

Lynda lives and writes in New York with her husband, four children and two adorable Maltese puppies (d'awww puppies!).

Welcome to day 4!

Alright, so today, I am hosting GRACE ELLIOT, the author of Eulogy's Secret.

The author is offering an eCopy of her book, and maybe you'd like to read an interview I did with hre before :

Where did you write the most (at home? Starbucks, etc.?)
I write in a converted garage, which is also our dining room. It has a lovely large window that runs the width of the wall and I sit on an old leopard print sofa with the light behind me. This sofa also acts as my office because it's wide enough to pile notebooks and reference material on whilst leaving enough space for me, my laptop and Widget. The later is my writer's cat; she curls up against my thigh and helps focus my attention. With Widget beside me I am much less prone to getting up to make cups of tea, because I know as soon as my seat is vacant she'll hop into the warm spot - and she can be very difficult to shift once she's settled.
I do however spend a lot of time writing in my head - either whilst walking to and from work, or whilst drifting off the sleep. The knack is to remember all those carefully crafted phrases and record them before I forget! For this I have stack of notebooks that I'm always scribbling in. So much so that my husband swears I can see in the dark since often my best ideas come just as I'm drifting off to sleep.

What's your favorite food and beverage?
I'm very partial to a good prawn dansak and glass of red wine. My husband and I are such regulars at our local Indian restaurant that he can phone to order a carry out and it takes less than 20 seconds - and that's with pleasantries!
In the 1990's we lived in Australia for a couple of years and the biggest culture shock was the lack of Indian Restaurants. I think we spent most of that time reminiscing about 'curries we had had', and when we returned to the UK, it made us appreciate a good curry even more.

Did you have a schedule while writing Eulogy's Secret, and if you did, what was it?
My only schedule whilst writing "Eulogy's Secret" was to write every day. I aimed to write for at least 20 minutes, regardless of how tired I was after work. What usually happens is that I get so immersed in the characters and plot that I look up to find two hours has gone by.
However, last November I took part in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and it has revolutionised the way I work. During NaNoWriMo I had a target of 1,670 words a day and by sticking to this schedule what I found out was how much time I waste - when I think I'm writing but I'm not. I started Book Two of The Huntley Trilogy during November and I've never been so productive - definitely a lesson learnt and it's changed my working habits.

Did you make the cover? If not, who? If yes, how?

I wish I was that talented!
The cover for "Eulogy's Secret" was designed by the awesome Reese Dante.  I love his covers and when I saw a blog post about how he creates them, I promised myself that even if I had to save for months, I'd commission him. He is a wonderful artist in his own rite, and if he can't find stock art that matches a particular feature on a character (a tattoo for example) then he will draw a bespoke one.
Reese is currently (at the time of writing) working on the cover for "Hope's Betrayal." He sent through a rough of the model for Hope and it gave me goosebumps - she is just as I imagine her. Can't wait to see the finished cover!

What would be the most surprising thing you didn't know would happen by becoming an author?
I write historical romance and what I hadn’t anticipated when I went public and told my friends, was just how many of them also read romance - and yet had kept it quiet!
Read into that what you will.

What would you say to your younger self as you were beginning to write Eulogy's Secret?
When starting to write "Eulogy's Secret" it would have been useful to know how much time I waste whilst I'm under the impression I'm writing. Definitely wish I'd discovered NaNoWriMo years ago!

Resume your book in five words or less!

            Appearances can deceive!

Where did you get the idea for your novel?
The idea came from one word written on a poster on the London Underground. I was taking my teenage sons to see "Spamalot" and through the scratched glass of the train window I saw written "Eulogy." (The poster was for a memorial concert at the Royal Albert Hall.)
It struck me that "Eulogy" would make a fantastically enigmatic name for a heroine. But what would drive a parent to call their child such a sad name? What tragedy would have befallen her? Perhaps the mother dying in childbirth…or another, far more sinister explanation! But to find out you'll have to read "Eulogy's Secret".

And, finally, thanks for answering those questions. A last word (or more)?
Thank you for hosting me, Cath. It's been lovely to chat to you and your readers. If anyone would like to find out more about me or my work then my blog is a great place to start:
I am also active on twitter as @Grace_Elliot
